What's in store for me?Take a look.
A201: Applied Chemistry I covers foundational concepts that are important for understanding chemical principles and techniques applied in the chemical industry, biotechnology, pharmaceutical industry and materials science. The four main themes of the module are the structure and properties of matter, the chemistry of life, the concept of equilibrium and chemical calculations. The scope of the module includes the principles of organic chemistry where structure function relationships will be emphasized, electrochemistry, as well as physical chemistry, including an introduction to thermochemistry and chemical equilibrium. Basic laboratory procedures will be introduced.
A221: Microbiology provides students with a basic understanding of micro-organisms. Topics include prokaryote cell structure and function, classification, viruses and fungi, growth and regulation, environmental factors affecting growth, microbial genetics and microbial evolution. Basic techniques in microbiology, including microscopy, staining, size measurement, cell enumeration, media preparation, the isolation and cultivation of pure cultures, and aseptic technique will also be covered. The industrial application of microbes will be explored.
A223: Biochemistry provides the fundamental concepts to understanding protein structure and function, as well as energy metabolism. Students will be introduced to macromolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and their components. Metabolism of these biological compounds will be examined, including the interrelations among the carbon, nitrogen, and energy cycles. The properties of enzymes are introduced, including types of enzyme, mechanism of action, cofactors, enzyme kinetics and enzyme inhibition. The module also outlines the major metabolic pathways involved in energy metabolism, such as glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid synthesis, beta-oxidation, gluconeogenesis, amino acid degradation, urea cycle and the pentose phosphate pathway. This module builds a foundation for understanding how living organisms harness chemical energy intracellularly for metabolic needs, and provides a good biological foundation for understanding the development and the scientific investigation of many metabolic diseases. The practical component of the module, which allows students to apply concepts covered in the theory component, will introduce students to materials, equipment and basic laboratory techniques which are frequently used in biochemistry laboratories, i.e. the handling of automatic pipettes, making solutions and dilution of solutions, the principles of spectrophotometric assays, as well as the practice of data handling and report writing, in addition to the aspects of safety and good laboratory practice.
A224: Recombinant DNA Technologies equips students with the requisite practical skills to manipulate DNA in the laboratory. Specific techniques involved in genetic manipulation will be reviewed. Principles underlying the commonly used enzymes, vectors and strategies for genetic manipulation will be inculcated. A range of relevant advanced techniques and their application will be covered with a focus on further illustrating the principles of Molecular Genetics. Students will be given the opportunity to build up their repertoire of practical laboratory skills.
